Nerve and muscle problems can be difficult to identify from symptoms alone, since numbness, weakness, or tingling can arise from many different causes. Our neurodiagnostic tests help the neurologist locate exactly where the problem lies.

An EEG records the electrical activity of the brain through small sensors placed on the scalp, and it's painless throughout. It's most often used to evaluate seizures or suspected epilepsy, though it can also help with certain other neurological concerns. You may be asked to relax, breathe deeply, or look at a flashing light at points during the test, since these can bring out patterns that wouldn't otherwise appear.

EMG checks the electrical activity within muscles to see whether weakness or wasting is coming from the muscle itself or from the nerve supplying it. A fine needle electrode is placed into the muscle being tested, which causes brief discomfort rather than significant pain for most patients. This is often done alongside nerve conduction studies for a fuller picture, and is particularly useful for conditions involving unexplained muscle weakness, cramping, or wasting that needs a precise cause.

This test measures how quickly and effectively electrical signals travel along peripheral nerves, which helps identify problems like nerve compression, as seen in carpal tunnel syndrome, or nerve damage from conditions such as diabetes. Small electrical pulses are delivered through the skin, producing a brief tingling sensation rather than real pain. It's a valuable test for patients with numbness, tingling, or weakness in the hands or feet.

For many nerve and muscle complaints, EMG and NCV are done together in a single sitting, since each test answers a slightly different question and combining them gives the neurologist a more complete assessment. This combined study is often advised for conditions like suspected nerve entrapment, peripheral neuropathy, or unexplained muscle weakness. While neither part is entirely comfortable, the information gained usually shortens the diagnostic journey considerably compared to relying on symptoms and examination alone.

Conditions like stroke, nerve injury, or other neurological problems can affect movement, coordination, and daily activities in ways that need specialised rehabilitation rather than generic exercise.
