Hematology tests examine the blood itself - red cells, white cells, platelets, and clotting factors - and a complete blood count is often among the first tests ordered for almost any complaint, from fatigue to fever to unexplained bruising. It can point towards anaemia, infection, or a bleeding tendency, sometimes before other symptoms are obvious. When an infection is suspected, microbiology testing identifies the specific bacteria, fungus, or organism responsible and checks which antibiotics it will actually respond to. This matters because treating an infection with the wrong medicine can delay recovery and contribute to resistance. Samples may be taken from blood, urine, wounds, or other sites depending on where the infection is suspected. Results can take a few days, since organisms need time to grow, but they guide precise treatment.

Certain conditions, particularly autoimmune diseases and some allergic or inflammatory disorders, are identified through specialised blood markers that standard tests don't cover. Immunology testing looks for these specific markers, helping confirm a diagnosis when symptoms alone leave room for doubt. These tests are usually ordered by a specialist once a particular condition is suspected, rather than as routine screening.

When tissue is removed during a biopsy or surgery, histopathology is where it's examined under the microscope to determine exactly what's going on - whether a growth is benign or cancerous, or what's driving an inflammatory condition. This is often the test that gives a definitive diagnosis after imaging has raised a concern. It typically takes several days for results, since tissue needs careful processing, and the wait can feel long, though accuracy at this stage matters enormously.

Cytology looks at individual cells rather than whole tissue samples, often collected through a simple, minimally invasive method such as a Pap smear or fine-needle aspiration. It's commonly used for cervical cancer screening and for evaluating lumps that can be sampled without full surgery. The procedure causes only brief discomfort in most cases, and results usually help decide whether further investigation, such as a biopsy, is genuinely needed or whether the finding is reassuring.

This covers the everyday testing of urine, stool, and other body fluids, which sounds unglamorous but tells us a great deal - from urinary infections to digestive issues to underlying metabolic problems. These are often quick, low-cost tests that form part of a routine workup, and results are usually available within hours. For symptoms like burning during urination or ongoing digestive complaints, this is frequently where the answer, or at least a useful clue, is found.

Beyond routine testing, our laboratory also supports more specific, less commonly needed investigations, ordered based on a particular clinical situation rather than as standard practice. These may include hormone panels, tumour markers, or other targeted tests requested by a specialist pursuing a particular diagnosis. Because these tests are more specific, they're usually requested only once initial findings point in a certain direction, helping confirm or refine a diagnosis rather than serving as a first screening step.
